There are some really common misconceptions around exercise. So I thought I would say a few words about it. đWhy should I exercise? For your health and physical strength. For keeping your muscles and bones strong. đïžExercise is not about: Getting abs or big "guns" and pushing yourself so hard, doing an exercise you hate, to look like an emaciated lollipop. đWho needs to exercise? Everyone! It doesn't matter if you are skinny, carrying extra weight, short, tall or whatever. Everyone needs to exercise for their health. At least 30 minutes a day, so you're puffing. đApart from losing weight, why else would I need to exercise? đïžWeight bearing exercise (like lifting weights, walking, doing push ups, swinging on monkey bars, using resistance bands) helps keep your bones stronger and may reduce your risk for bone disease. âłExercise helps to reduce stress, depression and anxiety and makes you feel happy, by releasing endorphins. đïžWeight bearing exercise helps to keep your muscles strong which is really important, especially as we age. đRegular exercise can help increase your energy levels, even in people who chronically ill or have chronic fatigue. đRegular exercise can help prevent you getting chronic disease by lowering blood pressure, improving insulin sensitivity, increasing blood flow, decreasing the amount of fat in your blood and reducing fat around your belly. đRegular exercise can improve your brain function! And reduce stress and inflammation in your body. đRegular exercise can help you sleep better and relax more. It can help reduce chronic pain and can improve your libido! đSo what kind of exercise should I do? Anything! Just make sure it's fun, something you enjoy, you do it regularly and it's hard enough to make you puff! Be wary of exercise products on the market that are being sold as easy ways to exercise, like those vibration machines. Most of them are a total scam. If you are not moving muscle and bone, if you are not getting your heart rate up or puffing, you won't be exercising. Save your money and go for a walk instead! For me being fit is about: Being able to run to the train, when its on the platform and I'm not! Being able to run around with the kids on the playground and be able to keep up with them (I can't, I always get tagged first!) Being able to sneeze, cough, jump on the tramp and not pee my pants (giving birth to 3 kids can have that effect!) Being able to lift a cast iron oven dish, full of food, out of the oven and not drop it. To be able to do this when I'm 75. To climb stairs and not get puffed To be able to lift my own weight.
